Tips to get kids involved in cleaning

Keeping a home tidy with kids around can feel like an endless mission. But what if the mess-makers could also be your little helpers? With the right approach, cleaning can become a shared routine—and even fun!

Here are some tips to help your children become part of the cleaning team at home:

1. Start with simple tasks
Young children can do more than you think. Picking up toys, putting dirty clothes in the hamper, or wiping down the table are great ways to introduce responsibility. The goal is to make cleaning feel like a normal part of the day.

2. Make it fun
Turn on music, set a timer, or make it a game (“Let’s see who picks up more toys in two minutes!”). Kids love to join in when there’s a playful challenge involved.

3. Use positive language
Instead of saying “This is such a mess,” try “Let’s make this space look nice together.” A more positive tone makes them feel included instead of criticized.

4. Create routines
Kids respond well to structure. If every evening includes a short clean-up session after dinner, they’ll start to expect it—and even do it without being asked.

5. Let them do it their way (even if it’s not perfect)
Give them the freedom to complete tasks on their own, even if it’s not done perfectly. Participation is more important than perfection. Skills come with practice.

6. Encourage with praise and gratitude
A simple “Thank you for helping clean the living room” can go a long way. Feeling appreciated makes kids more willing to help again.
